Work Experience What I learned
Drafting is a way of communicating through various visual and graphic representations. It helps the fabricator visualize the object and find the means in which to create it. It also helps simplify the object and the visual representation helps see exactly how the object would look, instead of offering a complicated explanation that increases the chance of a mistake in the fabrication process. It helps keep the process simple and accurate. This is why it is important that a drafter has the most up to date knowledge and to be familiar with previous standards in old drawings. And it helps the drafter understand old drawings, in case he might need to recreate or revise them.
The construction process begins with the owner wanting to create a building for a particular function. The architect or engineer find out the needs of the owner and study the site plan and the various setbacks, zoning laws and other inputs that influence the design. The structural design team proceeds to prepare sketches of the building and determining the cost for the owner's approval. The design team finalize the drawing giving distances, sizes and locations or structural components and send them to the steel fabricators who make a list of the material required and orders them from a steel producer. After the steel is fabricated it is shipped to site or stored in his yard. If a change occurs in the drawing they are sent to the fabricator or back or back to the structural design group.
For the drafting office the top position is the chief draftsman who is responsible for the operation of the entire office. He assigns the job to the Squad Leaders then they assign it to checkers who assign the work to a detailer who draws the actual shop detail drawing. The apprentice do print room work or simple beams and column details, and prepare shipping bills, bills of material and other similarly required information sheet.
In drafting language there are terms and abbreviations that could describe an object exactly. The structural shop detailer is required to know the member names and the shapes used to fabricate those members. He must also me familiar with the shape designations and range of sizes most commonly available in the Canadian market. A drafter must be able to create a white printing or a blue printing drawing, by using ink on a white piece of paper. He must be skilled in using tools such as the protractor, erasing shield, draftsmen brush and other items. They must also learn the effects of a pencil hardness on the neatness, they should also know how to write in single stroke gothic capital lettering to prevent errors from appearing ( for example B being mistaken for and 8 and a z for a 2, etc) and other text rules. They must also know how to create orthographic views of an object and know the number of views required for an object (determined by complexity).
Steel shapes properties (accuracy of cut lengths and mill tolerance) could influence the shop draftsman during the detailing procedure. The difference in shape due to rolling variation is called the rolling tolerance. The variation of length is not tolerated in the shop it is essential that the detailer is aware of its possibility of occurrence. This ensures that when he orders a required stock the material would fulfill the task it was ordered for. A sweep and camber could result in variations in the dimensions of structural shape. The place or location of one member's attachment shape or plate along with the means of fastening is called the connection detail. The bolts that connect the members is placed on a standard line or gauges. Gauges on an individual member should not vary through the length of the member (consistent). A beam is a horizontal member that carries the force and transmits it to its supports. The detailer finds out the type of beam depending on end loads or loads at support but it is obtained from a design drawing. Dimension should not crowd the sketch but should be uniformly spaced apart and cross the least amount of lines possible.
A column is a vertical compression member designed to support loads parallel to the longitudinal axis of the member the W-shaped column are usually picked unless a heavy column is required. A base plate is required when the column comes into contact with the foundation. It ensures that the weight of the column is uniformly distributed to the concrete foundation to prevent the weight from crushing it. Anchor bolts are used to connect the base plates to the concrete foundation wall, the base plate hole must be 6 mm larger than the anchor bolt diameter. Hook shaped anchor bolts are preferred since they feature aid in developing resistance against uplifting forces.
For the beams to transfer their weight into girders and for girders to transfer their weight into columns and for columns to transfer their weight into the footing they must be connected. They can be fastened through bolts or welding. Shear forces are forces with tend to cause a bolt to fail, it acts perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shear on the bolt. For a bolt to resist this load it must have a resistance equal to the load acting on the plates this is called the shear resistance of the bolt. The structural unit is only as strong as its weakest element.
Welding is the process of fusing 2 metals into one, fillet and groove welding are the most commonly used types of welding in the structural steel industry today. Shop and erection drawings must provide the shop and field with specific instructions (from weld size to its exact location.) Their exists specific welding symbols such as an isosceles right triangle meaning fillet or 2 parallel vertical lines meaning square. The length is expressed in millimetre even if the length is greater than 1 meter.
Work Experience What I Learned About Steel Detailers
Detailers
Detailers are vital members for the process of the creation of any object. They set the stage for the fabricators and the many other individuals responsible for putting the object together. They are responsible for creating a visuals, giving dimensions and instructions on how an object must be created, either with freehand drawings or using different programs which is more preferred (ex: AutoCAD, Inventor, Rivet, and Tekla Structures) due to it decreasing the amount of time and allowing the detailer to be more accurate than they would have been freehand. Detailers are usually very quick and very accurate so that they can speed up the process of creation and provide an accurate representation that prevents mistakes from occurring. There are many different types of detailers, mechanical detailers, steel detailers and auto detailers and there is also a huge variety of jobs for a detailers. Steel detailers could be modellers, checkers, editors and much more. They most often receive their calculations from engineers but should be capable of finding it themselves and they attempt to revise drawings as much as possible and strive for accuracy to prevent costly mistakes from occurring on sites. They create the structure and the connections between the parts (beams, columns, and joists) and show them in the drawings. They also make the drawing understandable and easy to read to help speed up the fabrication and building process, ensure the successfulness of the project and prevent confusion. They must have a common knowledge of how an object is but together and how to explain it in the drawing thus, they must have a common understanding the different types of bolt connections and the different types of weld connection. They must also know a structure must be edited or how it would be created if it was in under different conditions.
Lord of the Flies Agree or Disagree
Agree or Disagree
1. Individuals are basically evil and must constantly fight against their violent nature.
I strongly disagree with the above statement due to its presumption that humans are born evil. Firstly, we must understand what our society presumes evil to be. Human like every other organism have a special mindset that allows them to react subconsciously, it has been developed over centuries in order to increase our chances of survival. These mindsets are not evil but are characteristics we have acquired from our ancestors that greatly increase our chances of survival in many diverse settings. How we use those characteristics will define our nature as INDIVIDUALS, an individual cannot define a group of people based on his actions neither can a group of kids define the human race as a whole. Another example that strongly supports this idea are babies. They are mindless, innocent creatures that rely more on their senses than their experiences, they are believed to be free from any willful wrongdoing and free from the thought of doing evil (things that harm others). However, upon having the capacity to make choices for themselves, their choices could reflect good and evil. Because of these facts, we cannot presume that everyone is evil by default or by generalization, because there will always be people who make good choices. While others use the characteristics we have obtained from previous generation for their own gains. Our intentions are what defines our actions as good or evil. I believe it is more accurate to say that our nature is neither good nor evil but depends on how it is used.
2. Individuals will go along with any type of activity, no matter how violent, when pressured by their peers.
To agree with this statement is to believe that humans are incapable of making their own decisions. Peer-pressure is the cause of many of the problems that exist today, but we must note that people are capable on making their own decisions whether to give in to peer pressure or not. But the problem has stemmed from society. People giving in to what gets them to be socially accepted has to do with our short sighted society. Society does have a great influence on peoples beliefs and their morals. Many people strive to embrace societies goals and the "regulations" it had set, they strive to fit. This causes them to be willing to go against their own morals. But this is not always the case because many people abide to their morals and neglect society. So whether people decide to follow peer pressure or reject it depends on how strongly they abide to their morals. Everyone has a set limit that they will not pass, these limits decide how far people are willing to go. For instance, when a child wants to do something that their friends are doing, then wouldn't hurt him or her, but the parent says, "Well is he/she decided to jump off a cliff, would you too." This shows that both the parent and child are aware that there are limits that they are not willing to go over.
3. The human race is destined to destroy himself.
I strongly agree with this statement, but I do not believe that humans strive for their own extinction on purpose. Rather they are split between the people who are uncaring, people who are desperate, and others who are unaware. For example 31% of the earth is covered by forests that house many exotic species that help balance out nature and almost half of that has been cut down. Our oceans PH level has decreased which will cause our oceans to turn acidic in destined future. All this destruction and mayhem has been caused by humanity, many ignore the problems since they fail to see how this crisis will affect their lives. Other countries require to go through the same process of pollution to improve its economy while other countries are unwilling to stop pollution to remain on top list of all other countries. Due to the lack of understanding and unwillingness to cooperate. Ironically if all the resources were split between us evenly we all could co-exist on the planet. But due to our greed and selfishness and our disregard to the well being of our home planet and our fellow human beings well only cause us to eliminate ourselves.
4. Rules and punishments are absolutely necessary if we are to maintain a civilized society.
I strongly agree with this statement, because without rules to regulate us, we are free to do whatever we want. Even though many people possess a moral boundaries, the great diversity in morals causes people definition of right and wrong to be extremely different. Rules and punishments are necessary to keep a group of people under control they are extremely important because they would create a way to deter those who may attempt to threaten the safety of others. For instance prison is seen as a way to deter people from committing crimes, since it would take away many of the rights they possess and separate them from society. Because of the fear of jail time many people avoid committing crimes. With the inclusion of such boundaries and punishments, people would know which rules would create a safe haven for everyone who lives in a sanctuary. In order to make a society which is safe for every human being rules are always necessary.

Superstitions
Superstitions
The Wishing Well
Humans have always believed in superstitions, some that are scientifically unexplainable others that are not, these superstitions grew and are believed by many individuals today such as the wishing well.
Norse Well of Knowledge |
The biggest reason behind the exponential growth of this belief was due to people unknowingly discovering the biocidal properties of copper and silver. Those two metals are water purifiers since they are toxic to heterotrophic bacteria in aquatic environment. This killed the bacterium purifying the water. As for why people believe in many unexplainable superstitions is that it provides a sense of wonder. This helps keep human imagination running and our lives interesting. Not many people know the scientific reasoning behind the popularity of the wishing well but see it as a source of luck and wonder.

I am hardworking
I AM HARD WORKING
"There is no substitute for hard work" Thomas EdisonHey,
I am not a genius,
Or a know it all,
I don't find life straight forward,
Or find my classes simple,
Or ace every test effortlessly,
And I don't find,
Chemistry, Physics or Math simple,
Although many could believe so,
I have a strong will not a natural talent,
I am dedicated and persistent not intelligent,
I am hardworking and stubborn.
And I will always choose the difficult and rough road,
Not the smooth and simple one,
Pain not ease,
That a life without hardships is will never be the best option,
That pain and difficulty is what helps us grow,
And that intelligence is something we work for not born with,
Hard work is why we have everything we do,
From the roof on our head to the water we drink,
Hard work is more beneficial than intelligence.
My name is Basel and I am hardworking.
Personality Quizzes
MY PERSONALITY QUIZ
Jung & Meyers Briggs Personality Quiz helped proved many of the things that I already knew about myself. Firstly, it proved that I prefer to think, work and spend time alone than spending it with a large group of people. That is true since I find it hard to focus and work while I have people with similar interests, this is also true since I prefer to spend some time away from the roaring sound of the cars and the city. Secondly, it also proved that I am more perceiving than judging, that is true since I do not believe in judging people by how they look like but how they define themselves, by their personality and strengths. Thirdly, it stated that I have a preference of thinking over feeling. This is true to a certain extent, it is false since my actions are sometimes influenced by my emotion. But it is true since I most often use my mind to overcome certain emotions and stops them from influencing me such as anger, or regret. Jung & Meyers Briggs Personality Quiz had supported many of the ideas I already knew about myself but without going into much details.
As for the Multiple Intelligence quiz supports many ideas from the previous quiz but going as far as telling me some of my hobbies. Firstly, it states that I learn well from movement, from living the experience and making mistakes. This is true but I have not noticed this before, I find learning by mistakes and from hand on experience easier and usually hand on approach would be much more enjoyable. Secondly, It also states that I like spending time alone and that I work much better that way. This is true for the various reasons I had stated above and supports them by stating that "You will often take in information from another person, mull it over by yourself, and come back to that person later to discuss it." Finally, it spoke about my love for reading, writing, telling a story and listening to songs. Those are all in my list of hobbies, and I enjoy sharing stories since I find it as interesting way of sharing the thrill with others. The Multiple Intelligence quiz helped support many of the ideas I already had about myself and shared a few facts about hobbies.

Change in Identity
Change in Identity
People's identity tend to change as their environments affect them. As we grow older we become more aware of the world around us, and as we gain experiences and make mistakes we tend to adapt to better fit our environment. Who I am began to change as I got older and will continue to change as I make mistakes and gain new experiences.
Grade 8 was where I began to change when I entered high school and knew that I was know responsible for my own future. Before that point I cared very little about my grades or how I could achieve my future goals. I rarely tried except to prove to others that I was capable of facing challenges that they thought I could not handle. But when I entered high school my future dawned on me, as I began to hear about many of the obstacles and conflicts that would occur in the years to come. I began to build my skills towards finding out about how I could reach my goal of becoming an architect. The upcoming years helped me adapt as my goal became harder and harder to achieve.
After that period I became more enrolled and aware of the world around me. I volunteered in many places such as Newton public library and took part in many diverse events in school and in society. I also joined the drafting trade program to learn more about what I would be doing in the future and to get a head start on the other people that are planning on following my career path. I also began to try harder to ready myself for grade 11 and 12 since they would be the decisive years that would decide my future, my work habit and the time and effort I spent working increased drastically. I have become a completely different person as I alienated the past.
In the next five years I will have gained more life experiences which would constantly change my identity and my look on life. I hope to have increased my knowledge in many areas and to have set more goals for the future. I would also become more connected with my family and help them through their struggles. I would also become increasingly involved in the community and attempt to begin to create new ideas that would revolutionize buildings to better suit the environment. Similarly to before, the past would be very different than who I will become.
